Categories
Categories group challenges and control how they appear in the map and challenge list. Use them for topics such as Web, Crypto, Forensics, Reverse Engineering, OSINT, or difficulty bands. Create categories with a name, icon, background color, and text color, then assign challenges to them when editing challenges. The map and challenge list use the category's color and icon. See Making/editing a category.
Use Categories to
- Create categories for the current world.
- Edit category name, icon, background color, and text color.
- Import and export categories with CSV when you need bulk changes.
- Delete categories, including bulk deletion when needed.
- Review the category set before assigning challenges.
- Prepare category styling for the player map and challenge list.
Challenges are assigned to categories when editing the challenges themselves.
Category planning
- Keep category names short so they scan well in cards and filters.
- Use distinct colors so players can recognise challenge types quickly.
- Create categories before bulk importing or editing many challenges.
- Use readable text/background contrast; players see these colors in map and challenge surfaces.
- Keep icons consistent with the category meaning.
- Avoid too many near-duplicate categories, such as "Web", "Web Easy", and "Web Intro", unless difficulty is intentionally part of the category design.
CSV and bulk use
Use CSV import/export when you need to prepare categories outside the UI, copy a category set between worlds, or review category styling in bulk.
Before bulk deleting categories:
- Check whether challenges are assigned to them.
- Export a backup CSV if the category set matters.
- Review the map after deletion so challenge styling still makes sense.
